What is EverWatch Server Monitor?
EverWatch
Server Monitor allows you to continuously check the connection status of any
web server you choose. It is intended
for webmasters who want to monitor their web site at all times and be able to
view reports of any downtime. It also
measures average connection times. The
interval between web site polling is user-defined. An always-on internet connection is
recommended.
Why another Server Monitor?
We had need
for such a program ourselves and didn’t like any of the other freeware programs
that offered this functionality, nor did we want to pay someone else for a
service that would be so easy to develop ourselves. It only took a few hours to write and we
wanted to share it with others.
EverWatch Server Monitor Operation
EverWatch
is designed to run in the background and is only visible when you click it’s
icon in the Windows System Tray. However,
the first time you run EverWatch after installing or reinstalling it will make
itself visible so that it can be configured.
Configuration
Configuration
is very quick and simple. Enter the
IP address of the host/server you want to monitor in “Server HTTP Address”. Do not include the http://
portion of the address. For example,
to monitor http://www.accusolve.biz, you would
just enter www.accusolve.biz.
The default
polling interval is 15 minutes. You are
free to change that to anything you like ranging from 1 minute on up. Click on “Start” and you’re up and running!
Other Features
You may do
a manual poll anytime by clicking on “Poll Now”.
If you wish
to stop polling for any reason, click on “Stop”.
Hide the
application window by clicking on “Hide”.
This will return the application to background mode, with only the icon
showing in the system tray.
To shutdown
the application simply click on the ‘X’ system close icon in the upper right
hand corner of the window, or choose “Close” from the system menu in the upper
left hand corner.
Logging
Logging is
automatic. All activity is recorded in
the logging window, which takes up the major portion of the application window.
In order to
keep internet bandwidth to a minimum, only the web page’s headers are
retrieved. If you want to see what is
contained in the header of your web page, check “Display Header” and the text
of the header will be displayed in the log each time the web site is polled.
Click on
“Clear” to clear the log. You may want
to save the log to a file before clearing it – to do so, click on “Save” and
you will be prompted for the location and name of the file the log should be
saved to. If you haven’t already cleared
the log, you will be asked if you would like to clear it after saving.
By clicking
on the “Log Stats” button you will be able to see statistics of polling
activities since the last time statistics were displayed, or when the program
was started. You will see the number of
polls, how many and what kind of failures, as well as average poll times and
total bandwidth used.
If you are
closing the application and you have not already saved your logs, you will be
prompted to save them before closing.
INI File
Your
preferences and polling status are all automatically saved in a file named
srvmon.ini located in your Windows directory.
If polling was set to automatic when you exited last it will be started
with automatic polling when the application is restarted. You can tell if polling is automatic either
by reading the log file or noting the caption of the “Start/Stop” button. If it says “Stop” then polling has been
started and will run continuously at the specified interval.
Enjoy!
